HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant in DFW | Space Fireplace Services
Space Fireplace Services — DFW chimney & fireplace specialists. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.
Wood-burning fireplaces with cracked flue tiles can’t be safely used until the flue is sealed. HeatShield restores the flue without tearing out the existing tile. HeatShield is a patented cerfractory ceramic system that re-seals damaged terra-cotta flue tiles in place — no tear-out, no stainless liner, full code compliance. Space Fireplace Services is a HeatShield-certified installer across DFW. Range $2,800-$-+ 20-year warranty, meets NFPA 211, UL 1777, and ICC-ES AC396. Space Fireplace Services handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.
What’s actually involved
HeatShield is a patented cerfractory (ceramic + refractory) sealant developed by SaverSystems specifically for restoring damaged clay flue tiles. It’s installed in three forms — Joint Repair (for tile joint gaps), CeCure Sleeve Relining System (for cracked tiles), and full Resurfacing System (for severely damaged flues) — depending on what the Level 2 video inspection finds.
How it works: a foam applicator tool the exact diameter of the flue is pulled up the chimney, depositing the cerfractory material against the tile walls. It cures into a smooth, monolithic ceramic surface — bonded to the original tile, sealing cracks and gaps. The resulting flue passes Level 2 video re-inspection.
Why HeatShield instead of stainless liner: HeatShield restores the original tile (preserving the chimney’s original draft characteristics) and costs roughly half what stainless does for equivalent damage. Stainless is the right answer for severely deteriorated flues, oversized flues, or specific fuel-conversion scenarios — HeatShield is the right answer for cracked-but-intact tile flues, which is most older DFW masonry chimneys.
Why HeatShield instead of tile replacement: tile replacement requires opening the chimney structure (removing brick) to access damaged tiles, then rebuilding. HeatShield works from the bottom of the flue with no demolition. The cost difference is typically 3-4x in HeatShield’s favor.
What HeatShield is NOT: it’s not a DIY product, not a coating you apply with a brush, and not a substitute for full structural rebuild when the chimney has bigger problems (leaning, severe spalling, failed crown). It’s a flue-tile restoration system, full stop.
Why this matters in DFW specifically
DFW masonry chimneys built 1970-2000 almost universally use clay flue tiles with mortar joints — and after 25-50 years of thermal cycling (DFW’s wide annual temperature swing makes this worse than colder, more stable climates), those joints crack. Level 2 video inspections in DFW find cracked tile joints in roughly 40% of chimneys built before 2000. HeatShield’s joint repair system was designed for exactly this failure mode. We install it 3-4x more often than stainless across DFW because the underlying problem (joint failure on otherwise-sound tile) is so common here.
Our process
- Level 2 video inspection first — We don’t quote HeatShield off a visual inspection. The video has to show the actual damage extent — joint gaps vs cracked tiles vs severely deteriorated flue, each gets a different HeatShield system.
- Written scope + warranty — Joint Repair, CeCure Sleeve, or full Resurfacing — quoted with the specific HeatShield system and 20-year warranty terms in writing.
- Flue prep — Sweep to bare tile, pressure-test to find every crack and gap. HeatShield bonds to clean tile only — sweep + clean is non-negotiable.
- Cerfractory installation — Foam applicator tool sized to the flue, pulled through with HeatShield material in 1-3 passes depending on damage. Material cures in 24-48 hours.
- Post-install Level 2 verification — Same camera, same flue, post-cure. Video shows the restored monolithic surface. Report and warranty paperwork delivered.
Materials and standards
HeatShield is manufactured by SaverSystems (Indianapolis, IN) and listed under UL 1777 (Standard for Chimney Liners), ICC-ES AC396 (Acceptance Criteria for Chimney Lining Systems), and meets NFPA 211 chapter 7 requirements for relining. Material is non-combustible cerfractory (ceramic + refractory blend), service temperature continuous 1,800°F, intermittent 2,100°F. Installer certification required — we maintain current SaverSystems installer credentials.

Frequently asked questions
How long does HeatShield last?
20-year manufacturer warranty on material; we warranty workmanship for the same period. Real-world: properly installed cerfractory liners are still in service 30+ years out from the original install dates in the late 1990s.
Will it shrink the flue size?
Joint repair adds essentially zero flue diameter. Sleeve and Resurfacing add 1/4 to 3/4 inch of wall thickness depending on damage. For most DFW chimneys this stays well above the minimum draft cross-section requirement.
Can I use the fireplace right after?
No — 24 to 48 hour cure time before first fire. We schedule install with that buffer in mind.
Will it pass insurance / real-estate inspection?
Yes. The post-install Level 2 video + the manufacturer warranty paperwork is exactly what insurance carriers and real-estate inspectors want to see. We provide both.
Why not just put in a stainless liner?
Stainless is the right call for severely deteriorated flues, oversized flues, or fuel-conversion (wood-to-gas requiring a specific liner size). For a flue with cracked joints but otherwise-sound tile, HeatShield costs about half and preserves the original draft. Both are NFPA-compliant solutions; the choice is engineering, not preference.
Does HeatShield work for gas appliances too?
Yes — HeatShield is rated for solid-fuel, oil, and gas appliances. The system selection differs slightly based on flue gas characteristics. We confirm appliance type and flue size before quoting.
