What is Refractory Mortar?

Refractory mortar is an alumina-silica based, calcium-aluminate-cement mortar formulated to withstand the same temperatures as the firebrick it bonds (ASTM C199 medium-duty rates to 2,500F+). It is sold in two forms: heat-set (air dries, cures with first burn) and water-set (chemical-set hydraulic). Inside the firebox we use only refractory mortar — never standard masonry mortar, which will crack, crumble, and fall out within one heating season. Refractory mortar joints must be tight (1/16 inch) to prevent flame infiltration that can rapidly degrade the brick. Smoke chamber parging and throat lining also use refractory mortar.
