Above the damper, the smoke chamber narrows the firebox opening down to the flue — and in most older masonry fireplaces it was built as raw corbelled brick, a stepped ledge on every course. Each step is turbulence, and turbulence is why an otherwise handsome fireplace pushes smoke into the room and packs creosote where nobody can see it. Parging applies refractory mortar over those steps, by trowel or spray, to form the smooth continuous funnel the code calls for, at the right thickness for the material behind it. Draft improves immediately and there is far less rough surface for deposits to grab. Chamber size, access through the damper throat, and how much missing mortar has to be rebuilt first set the figure.
