Once the refractory panels in a factory-built firebox crack clean through, crumble, or begin to bow, sealing stops being the answer — they have to be replaced. Manufacturers draw a clear line: past their stated threshold, the panel has lost the integrity it needs to shield the metal firebox and framing from the fire, and a fire-safe firebox depends on intact panels.
