A chimney cap is the single most cost-effective protective add-on for any chimney — it keeps water, animals, and debris out of the flue, and adds a spark-arrestor screen that can prevent rooftop fires from windblown embers. — Space Fireplace Services Space Fireplace Services handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.

What’s actually involved

A chimney cap sits at the top of the flue and serves three jobs: keeps rainwater out (which is the #1 cause of chimney damage), keeps animals (raccoons, squirrels, birds) out of the flue, and arrests sparks/embers from rising and igniting the roof or nearby vegetation.

Standard caps are stainless steel, copper, or galvanized. We recommend stainless for DFW — it handles freeze-thaw and hail without rusting through, and the extra cost over galvanized pays back in 5-7 years.

Single-flue caps fit one flue tile; multi-flue caps cover two or more flues plus the entire crown surface (giving the crown extra weather protection too).

Cap installation includes proper sizing to the flue, secure attachment that won’t blow off in DFW storm winds, and a quick visual inspection of the crown and top course of brick while we’re up there.

Why this matters in DFW specifically

DFW gets hailstorms and 60+ mph storm winds that tear off undersized or improperly anchored caps. We see at least one missing-cap call per week after major storms. A correctly anchored stainless cap is one of the cheapest chimney upgrades and saves thousands in downstream water-damage repairs.

Our process

  1. Measure the flue — We measure the flue tile (or chase opening for prefab) on-site before quoting — caps are not one-size-fits-all.
  2. Cap selection — Stainless, copper, or galvanized; single or multi-flue. We bring options.
  3. Installation — Anchored to the crown or flue tile per cap type; sealed where appropriate.
  4. Final check — Quick visual of the crown, top course of brick, and the flashing while we’re up there. Photo report.

Materials and standards

All chimney cap installation work follows NFPA 211 (the National Fire Protection Association standard for chimneys, fireplaces, vents, and solid-fuel-burning appliances) and CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) protocols. Our technicians carry general liability insurance and workers’ comp.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a chimney cap?

Yes if you have an open flue. Water damage from an uncapped chimney is the #1 cause of chimney repair calls. A $400 cap prevents thousands in repairs.

Will a cap reduce my fireplace’s draft?

A correctly sized cap won’t. Undersized or screen-clogged caps can — we size correctly and check screen annually.

How long does a stainless cap last in DFW?

20-30 years typically. Galvanized: 7-12 years. Copper: 30-50 years.

Do you install caps on prefab chimneys (chase covers)?

Yes — chase cover replacement is similar work. We measure on-site and fabricate to fit.

Will hail damage my cap?

Major hail can dent stainless and crack galvanized — but the cap takes the damage instead of the chimney itself. Inspect after major storms.
