Fireplace Replacement — Space Fireplace Services
Old fireplaces don’t last forever. Worn refractory panels, failed dampers, inefficient designs, dated aesthetics — at some point, replacement makes more sense than repair. We handle full fireplace replacements that bring your hearth into the modern era.
When Replacement Beats Repair
If your firebox panels are cracking, your insert is more than 20 years old, your fireplace burns inefficiently, or the unit simply looks out of place in a remodeled room, replacement is often the smarter long-term investment. Modern direct-vent units burn 70-90% efficient compared to older open fireplaces. New designs offer linear shapes, remote controls, and smart-home integration. And the aesthetic difference is often dramatic.
Replacement Options
The most common replacement path is a direct-vent gas insert into an existing masonry fireplace. The old firebox stays in place; we install the new insert with a stainless liner, gas line, and surround. Other options include full wood-to-gas conversions, gas-to-electric conversions for sealed rooms, and full demolition-and-rebuild for major renovations. Each path has different cost, timeline, and complexity profiles — we’ll walk you through them.
The Replacement Process
Replacement projects start with a thorough evaluation of the existing system, including a Level 2 chimney inspection if applicable. We then quote the new unit, surround changes, and any masonry work needed. Most replacements complete in one to three working days for inserts, longer for full rebuilds. We coordinate any required permits and inspections.
Aesthetic & Efficiency Upgrades
Replacement is also a chance to refresh the surrounding hearth. New stone veneer, custom mantels, updated tile — these often happen alongside the unit replacement and turn the fireplace from a tired feature into the focal point of the room.
