Just out of view above the firebox everyone admires, between the damper and the flue, sits a funnel-shaped transition called the smoke chamber — and on a great many older chimneys it's built from corbeled brick with rough, stepped, mortar-gapped walls. That roughness is the flaw hiding right behind the showpiece: it disrupts the smooth flow of smoke, gives creosote countless ledges to cling to, and leaves gaps where heat can reach combustibles. Parging is the fix the code calls for, and it's one of the defects most often missed.
01What the smoke chamber does
The smoke chamber is the engineered transition that compresses the wide opening of the firebox down to the much smaller flue above it. For the chimney to draft properly, that funnel needs smooth, even walls so smoke accelerates cleanly upward. When the chamber is rough corbeled brick with exposed steps and open mortar joints, the draft is turbulent, smoke lingers, and creosote builds on every ledge — a performance problem and a fire-safety problem at once, both feeding back to the fireplace on display below.
02What parging is
Parging is the finish work behind the scenes: applying a smooth, code-compliant refractory coating over the smoke chamber walls, filling the gaps and turning the rough corbeled surface into a clean, sloped, sealed funnel. A properly parged smoke chamber drafts better, gives creosote far fewer places to accumulate, and — critically — closes the gaps that let heat migrate toward the surrounding framing. It's a building-science detail that protects the showpiece, not a cosmetic one.

An unparged smoke chamber with open joints is a clearance-to-combustibles concern: heat finds the gaps and the adjacent wood framing over years of fires, and that's the kind of slow ignition risk an inspection is meant to catch. NFPA 211 and modern code expect the smoke chamber to be smooth and sealed. It's a frequent finding precisely because it's hidden just past the part you do see — homeowners never lay eyes on it, and a quick visual that stops at the handsome firebox never reaches it.
